Yongnuo YN-468 test shot

Here are some test shots YongNuo YN-468 speedlight on my Nikon D5100 . Generally, this cheap speedlight provide enough accuracy in power and color.

On-camera, 90 degree vertical with bouncer.

The scene is overcast. I set my exposure lower, then add lights directly from speedlight on-camera to pop-up my model. Note that the model is about 15 meter from camera, YN-468 has enough power to luminance the model.

On-camera, direct to subject. See the jealous at background :).

Optical slave capability

Worth to note:
-YN-468 has TTL mode, but I found its often over power, I suggest you to set power compensation to -1EV.
-I strongly suggest you to shot in manual ISO. If your camera is in auto ISO mode, try to set max ISO about 800.
-Set the speedlight about 45-90 degree for softer light if you put it on-camera. Use the built-in bouncer to soften shadow and eye catch-light effect.

Nikon updates for lens distortion control version 1.009 for Nikon DSLR D4, D90, D600, D800, D800E, D3100, D3200, D5000, D5100, D5200, D7000 and D7100.

Lightroom: How to reduce noise and color corection

I took an image from my daughter's pinky Hello Kitty, while learn how to operate my Nikon D5100 in Manual Mode and White Balance setting.

The color is too yellowish, ruined pinky Kitty. Too noisy, it's is ISO 12500.

Photo after editing. Nothing special, but I learn how to correct color and reduce noise.


In Basic module, try the Auto White Balance (WB) first, and make adjustment until you get the most you like. Make adjustment for exposure and contrast.

In Detail module, try to adjust Noise Reduction. Be careful, too much reduction will make your subject look a like "plastic", notice that the Kitty has fluff.

Make color adjustment to bring back the pink.

What I learned:
-Make adjustment slowly and carefuly. Try to slide the slider one by one step, and take a look how it affect your image. You may also click the number right to slider, and enter the value you consider the best.
-Its better to take noisy (high ISO as compensation for high shutter speed) rather than low noise image but fuzzy/blury (low ISO and low shutter speed). The blurry image cannot be corrected into sharp image :).

Nikon D5100+Kit lens 18-55mm: Blur background

Here its the example of Nikon D5100 16.2MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens for taking photo with blur background.

Camera set up:
-Set shooting mode to Aperture Priority.
-Set your lens to its maximum zoom.
-Set f-stop to maximum (f/5.6 in 55mm for this 18-55mm kit lens).

With zoom focal length 50mm, f/5.6, Auto ISO, Auto White Balance, shutter speed 1/30s

Focal length 55mm, f/5.6, Auto ISO 100, Auto White Balance, flash trigered

I like the natural look of the image, only some minor correction for adding contrast +3 and black +7 in Lightroom. Nikon D5100 Picture Control set to Standard. In wide-open aperture, the contrast decreased. It seems better to shift contrast up to +3 and shift sharpening about +6 for dim light condition and when widest aperture used.

Note:
-The more distant your subject from the background, the more the background "disappear".
-The wider the aperture, also will make the background much more blur.
-Some prime lens with large aperture, eg. Nikon 35mm 1.8, Nikon 50mm 1.8, has good reputation for good "bokeh" (the character how the background blur). See how the reflection from the bicycle on image above, the "glowing cycle" is pleased to look.
